What is a liposome?

Liposomes are microscopic “bubbles” or spheres formed by phospholipids that act as carriers to deliver active substances—in this case, nutrients—directly to our cells and tissues. They are effective because their structure is similar to that of our own cells. The outer lining of our cells contains phospholipids identical to those that make up liposomes. Without the proper transporters on the cell surface to allow vitamin C to penetrate the waterproof lipid layer of cell membranes, the vitamin would remain outside the cells and fail to deliver its intended benefits to the body. Liposomal vitamin C is a unique delivery method that acts as a carrier, delivering active nutrients directly to our cells and tissues in a way that other delivery methods do not.

What is the difference between "real liposomes?"

To create a true liposome, you need to properly combine the active ingredients with a phospholipid carrier, creating uniform beads about 150 nanometers in diameter that completely contain the active ingredient. You can't just mix vitamin C with lecithin and call it a liposomal product, but unfortunately some products turn out to be such as a result of composition analysis.

Particle size matters, production method matters, and the materials themselves matter. Phospholipids should not be hydroxylated or hydrogenated, and should be as pure as possible. Liposomal Vitamin C uses phosphatidylcholine from non-GMO sunflower lecithin, as this is the preferred source, given that phosphatidylcholine is one of the major phospholipids in all cell membranes.
